Major Commons plugin updates scheduled for 2014-1-21

During the maintenance release on January 21, 2014, WordPress will be upgraded to the 3.8 series, and BuddyPress will being upgraded to the 1.9 series.

The following plugins will receive major upgrades during the maintenance release on January 21, 2014. The numbers in parentheses represent the major version series for each plugin; on the 21st, the plugin will be upgraded to the latest available version in that series, but no later.

Commons 1.5.9

I’ve just released version 1.5.9 of the CUNY Academic Commons. This maintenance release introduces a number of custom shortcodes for hosted projects, and fixes a bug in Prezi embedding.

Commons 1.5.6

I’ve just released version 1.5.6 of the CUNY Academic Commons. This maintenance release added support for Github and Vimeo profile fields, as well as a new Storify embedding plugin for WordPress.

New Release Schedule and Procedures document available

Starting today, the Commons dev team is rolling out a new procedure to warn Commons members of certain sorts of WordPress plugin updates on the site. This policy is part of a response to some recent problems where one of our partner developers – members of the Commons who use our platform as a host for their organization’s website – found his site broken by a major (and buggy) upgrade to one of the plugins underpinning his site’s functionality. In response, we’ll now be announcing on the 5th of each month which Commons software (WordPress and BuddyPress, along with other plugins and themes) will be receiving major updates on the 21st of that month.
